Having began his career with FC Twente in Holland, he then joined Vitesse Arnhem helping them to qualify for Europe during the 1998-99 season, before his dream move to Liverpool.Westerveld was in the Dutch squad that reached the semi-finals at Euro 2000, making three appearances (two as substitute). He impressed in the 2-1 group victory over eventual champions France and he will surely continue to push Number One Edwin Van der Sar all the way.

Dutchman Sander Westerveld became the most expensive goalkeeper in British football when he joined the Reds for a reported fee of ? million. The giant keeper was manager Gérard Houllier's choice to succeed David James as Anfield's number one, and Westerveld fully justified the manager's confidence by playing a leading role in Liverpool's return to Europe, and conceding the least number of goals in the Premiership last season.

Not only is he a calming influence as the last line of defence, he has excellent communication and is constantly keeping his defenders on their toes. Westerveld's giant clearances also give Liverpool an added dimension and who would bet against him scoring from one!
